This weekend was my first foray into the world of consignment. Overall, I had a very positive experience.

I had two tubs of baby toys, the baby crib set, and some infant clothes (with the tags still on!) that I wanted to get rid of.

I was poking around Craig’s List to see if that might be a good avenue to sell the items. I happened upon a link to a consignment sale though Kid’s Closet Connection. I had never heard about it before, but it sounded great.

They hold sales twice a year. You sign up to be a consignor through the web site, log in your the items that you want to sell, print out tags, affix them to the items, and drop off at the sale. You don’t have to be present to sell the items.

The part I liked the best was the web site where you could check the status of all of your items during the sale. On the last day, you can choose to mark your items down 50% or leave them at the full price. You can also choose to have the unsold items donated at the end of the sale or pick them back up.

I sold all but 4 items and made $60.00. Not too bad. For me, I was more interested in finding homes for the items than making money. The last time I took things to Goodwill and saw them thrown into a pile as big as a football field, my heart sank. I like knowing that the items will continue to be useful or to bring joy to another family.

I also found some great clothes for L. He had very few summer items, so I got him some really cute short outfits, and E got a few things as well.

It definitely takes some time to get the items cleaned, organized, price, and tagged, but I really enjoyed the experience. Would highly recommend.

I was working on making a chore chart this week for LM when I came across this one from ModEco Kids. Just download the pdf in Adobe (Preview for Mac doesn’t work as well) and fill in the blanks.

Since LM doesn’t read yet, I added the pictures. I just took photographs of the items, printed them out as a contact sheet, cut them out, and used double-sided tape to adhere them to the printout. I was pretty pleased with the results. I then put the whole thing in a plastic sleeve, so we can use a dry erase pen with it.

There are only three items on the list right now; there are a few other things like picking up toys and taking his plate to the sink that we expect him to do just as part of being part of the family.

For each “extra” task, he gets $0.25. I know there is a lot of discussion about whether to pay your kids or not, how much to pay them, when to pay them, etc. Some people don’t think you should pay children; some people think the payment should just be automatic and not tied to specific tasks.

Right now, we are going to try this approach and see how it goes. Immediately after completing the task, he colored in the circle and got a quarter. He put the quarter in a jar that he has in his room. The jar is for spending, and he has a piggy bank for saving. Eventually, I would like to add a third container for giving, but I just want to take one thing at a time with this.

Tonight was the first night we used the chart, and he was super excited to color in the circles next to the tasks. He was so disappointed that the silverware in the dishwasher was dirty, so it couldn’t be put away.

You wouldn’t think that a four-year-old could run a vacuum, but he wrestles that thing all around his room and actually does quite a good job. A reminder to me not to underestimate him!

First, just let me say that grocery shopping has to be one of my least favorite activities. It is annoying to me to spend that much time and money on something like food that is so fleeting.

Since 1998, I have used Quicken to track finances. There is some interesting data in all of those entries. Take grocery bills, for example. Starting the first full year we were married (2003), here is what we have spent on groceries:

2003 $2859.79

2004 $4211.39

2005 $5413.42

2006 $5661.68

2007 $6675.73

2008 $6681.77

We are on pace in 2009 to spend about the same as in 2008.

Clearly, the amount we have spent has more than doubled in six years. What I don’t know is how much of that can be attributed to inflation and rising food costs on one hand and just increased spending on our part.

How does that 6681.77 break down? That fed three people, three meals a day; W and I both pack a lunch. Let’s say on average we ate out two meals a week*, which is accounted for in a different Quicken category. 3 meals a day x 7 days a week - 2 restaurant meals = 19 meals a week x 3 people = 57 meals a week x 52 weeks a year = 2964 meals / 6681.77 = $2.25/meal. Is that right? That seems ridiculously low.

*Most weeks we don’t eat out at all, but times like vacation we eat at restaurants more.

Teachers can register their specific needs (lab coats, digital cameras, art supplies, etc.) and people can then donate money toward the items. You can search for projects by location or by type. So you can support your local school system or a subject near and dear to your heart.

I spend a fair amount of time entering receipts into Quicken, so we can track our spending and for tax purposes. I also categorize those expenditures.

On some receipts, there might be as many as five or six different categories, and it is time consuming (and inexact–have you ever read a receipt and how know idea what the code stood for) to divide and calculate everything up. For example, if I go to Target and buy milk, a birthday card, laundry detergent, and a shirt for LM, the corresponding categories would be: groceries, gifts given, household, and clothing.

Wouldn’t it be great if I could dock my iPod Touch at a kiosk in the store which would then download the receipt onto the iPod. I could build a library of frequently purchased items and their corresponding categories. When I got home, I could sync the iPod with Quicken, automatically importing the data.

OR…I was just thinking that the whole docking thing would include a lot of start up costs, etc. for the hardware. What if stores provided you with a card, like a gift card, with your receipt electronically on it. With a small device at home, like a credit card processing machine, you could read the card and import it into the computer.

OR…what if the store had a website where each shopper had an account. After logging in, you could download the data from the website.

When you think about it, it seems kinda crazy to be dealing with tiny slips of paper. There should be an option to get the same information that is on a paper receipt in electronic format directly from the source.

meeting with the pastor about FH’s baptism

haircut (which is desperately needed)

chiropractor

FH’s three month checkup

eye appointment

We are also having a four-year-old birthday party for LM on Sunday, and somewhere in there I still need to lose ten pounds. Totally backslid this last week. Eating an entire bag of chocolate chips is probably not a good thing.

I should mention, just for the record, that I do not have a bad job at all. I know it may sound like I am going back to the worse thing ever, but that is not the case.

Of course, there is the proverbial grass is greener on the other side thing. I know in my head that if I truly quit my job to stay home with the kids there would be negative things about that too. For starters, money would be a huge issue. It is convenient to think all things would be fine but that is because my check “magically” appears in the checking account every two weeks while I have been on leave. This, obviously, would not be the case if I didn’t have a job.

It was busy, hot, and we even made some (a little) money.

IF we do it again, here are some things we learned:

Do as much of the pricing beforehand.

Price every individual item if at all possible.

Make sure the prices on the items are correct. The kids switched some of the stickers without our noticing, and I think some of the items did not sell because the price was too high.

The early birds can be REALLY early. We said 8:00 in the ad, and had someone sitting on the curb at 7:15. It was difficult to be finishing up the pricing and dealing with customers at the same time.

Do the pricing at a time when people will not stop by, or behind the garage doors. We did some of the set up on Friday morning, and people kept stopping by, thinking we were having a sale. That really slowed us down.

Do not underestimate the number of tables or flat surface needed to set out all of the items. We had to go get more tables.

No one came after 1:00 p.m. Officially run the sale from 7:00 to 1:00 instead of 8-3.

People can be incredibly cheap.

People can be incredibly rude.

Put baby clothes in different bins that are labeled e.g. 0-3 onesies, 6-9 outfits. People just rifled through the piles, and it was difficult keeping everything straight.

Do put an ad in the newspaper.

Do have the money box and table all ready to go before uncovering the tables.

Do have the tables all set up in the driveway and just cover them the night before.

Update on original post of 8/21/09

I did sell a few books at the family yard sale, and the rest of those went to charity. I actually had about 60 set aside to go to Abebooks and Powells. I even went to the trouble to type in each of the ISBNs into both sites to see which one would pay the most.

Unfortunately, maternity leave ended before I actually got them boxed up and sent away. Today, after sitting out in the basement for over three months, I just took them to the Library’s book sale.

Part of me is sad to see them go; I enjoyed reading a lot of them, and they represent a different time in my life. Another part of me is glad to get them out of the house finally. Hopefully someone else will buy them and enjoy them.

Like any self-respecting, overeducated individual with two Master’s degrees, I have a lot of books.

I am ready to part with many of these books. The question then becomes, “what is the best way to do so?” Here are some of the options:

1. Yard Sale–The family yard sale is in a couple of weeks

Positive: Little preparation or research needed. Throw (gently place, of course) the books on a table marked $1.00.

Negative: Likely to get very little monetary return. Many books will likely not sell.

2. Half.com–A company owned by ebay

Positive: Much larger audience than our yard sale. Can set own price. Likely to get a little bit more than yard sale prices. Reimburses sellers for shipping costs.

Negative: Have to research market price. Must package and ship the books as they sell. If books don’t sell, I still have them in the house. Half.com charges a commission of a percentage of the selling price. 15% for the price range my books would be in ($0.75-$50.00)

3. Amazon.com–Similar to half.com. Amazon collects a commission of 6-15% of sale price, 0.99 per transaction, and a variable transaction fee ($1.35 for books)

4. Powells.com–They have a sell online feature. Type in the ISBN, and almost immediately a price is returned for what they will give you for the book. You can get the credit as cash paid via PayPal or as a credit in the Powells store. The store credit is twenty percent more than the cash option.

Positive: Powells pays for shipping. No pricing research required, no listing or packaging to different customers necessary. Make more than at a yard sale or library donation.

Negative: Make less per book than potentially with half.com and amazon.com.

5. Abebooks.com–very similar to Powells online buy book feature

6. Library Donation–The local library is having its annual book sale soon and is soliciting donations.

Positive: All I have to do is drop the books off at the library. Done deal. They are out of the house–all of them in one fell swoop.

Negative: No monetary return. Many of the books will likely not sell at the library sale, leaving the library trying to figure out what to do with them.

Conclusion: I know some people really get into listing things on ebay, amazon, etc., and I do not doubt there is money to be made if you are willing to put in the work. For me, right now in my life, I think I am going with the Powells/Abebooks option. At least I will get a little bit of money for the books. For those that Powells/Abebooks will not take, I may investigate whether ebay or amazon would be good options. Otherwise they are going in the yard sale. If not sold there, then on to the library.

Quite frankly, the whole textbook industry burns my ass. I pay $40 for a used book. I can sell it back for $5, and then the book store resells it for $35.

On a regular basis, my brother-in-law and I come up with ideas to generate income outside of our regular jobs. The Frugal Dad gave our potential activities a name:

“A side hustle is a sort of part time job, but it typically involves you building something around your current trade.”

This also goes along the lines of “minding your own business” from Rich Dad Poor Dad.

OK, so what is my business? What is it that I know about, am interested in, have a unique contribution?

General Ideas

archives

preservation

organization

technology

motherhood

gluten free eating

beginning investor

travel in area with kids

More Specific Ideas

Consult with local businesses/individuals on preserving archives

Offer a service like This Young House with advice on preservation

Become a personal organizer

Work with churches to improve their websites/start new outreach like blogs/facebook/etc.

Blog about journey as a beginning investor

Develop a blog/site about places to visit in the area with kids. I actually think this idea has some merit. As far as I can tell there is not a consolidated site that has descriptions and reviews of places of interest–especially from a mother’s point of view. On the weekends, we say, “ok where should we go?” It is a real pain to visit all of the web sites of potential places, and it is difficult to find out relevant information or even come up with ideas. I would love to have reader-submitted reviews as well as my own. It could be tied to Flickr, Google Maps and all kinds of exciting things. Not sure about the income-generating part though???
